Until and till subordinating conjunctions

  4. Meaning of “Until” — By the time that/Upto the time that.

  6. Meaning of Till — At the time that. 
  7. Future tense is not used in “till and until clause”.
  8. Both are used as preposition of time as well.
  9. Until is more formal than till.

1. Until and till used as a subordinating conjunctions —

  • He decides to have some snacks until circus begins.(Until circus begins –subordinating clause)
  • I won’t go out until they evaluate my essay. (Until they evaluate my essay– subordinating clause)
  •  Until she instructs, I will keep writing. (Until she instructs — subordinating clause)
  • The cyclone won’t weaken until it reaches land surface. (Until it reaches land surface — subordinating clause)
  • I won’t give up till you surrender. ( Till you surrender — subordinating clause)
  • We will continue to protest till you agree. ( Till you agree — subordinating clause)

2. Comma is used when “Till and Until” used at the beginning —

  • Until he stops, I will keep writing. (Comma is used to separate depending clause from main)
  • Until it start raining, school will be opened.
  • Till the result come, just keep patience.

3. Until conjunction sense slightly conditional —

  • Patients do not need ventilators until they complain breathing difficulty. (Ventilators will be needed only when patients complain)
  • Teacher cannot permit until students agree with terms and conditions. (Permit only on condition)
  • Until it start raining, school will be opened.
  • The Stock will correct until it rises at all time high.

4. Future tense is not used in depending clause —

  • The stock will correct until it rises at all time high. (Not it–will rise)
  • I won’t give up till you surrender.( Not–you will) 

5. Both Until and Till are also used as preposition–

  • We will reach there till 5 o’clock.
  • I know you will not complete your homework until next week.
  • Yours exam will not be held Until next year.

“Until” is more formal than till. It means that until is more preferred in writing, expression etc. Compare to “Till”

6. Examples of Till —

  • We will continue to protest till you agree
  • Just keep quiet till the result come.
  • Don’t go out till the message come.
